Privacy Policy

VispNote Privacy Policy

Effective May 4, 2026. VispNote is a local-first desktop notes app. This policy explains what data the app and website handle, when data may leave your device, and what controls you have.

Short Version

VispNote does not require an account, does not run advertising, does not sell personal information, and does not collect your notes for a VispNote cloud service. Your notes, canvases, tasks, reminders, indexes, and settings are stored on your device by default.

Information Handled by the App

When you use VispNote, the app stores information needed to provide the notes experience on your computer. This can include:

  • Markdown notes, page properties, tags, backlinks, block references, embeds, tasks, reminders, workflow states, and novelist project data.
  • Canvas data stored as JSON files in the active vault.
  • Local search, graph, and AI indexes used to search and reference your active vault.
  • App settings such as theme, editor preferences, vault paths, shortcut settings, AI provider settings, and locally saved API keys if you configure hosted AI.

By default, VispNote stores notes under ~/VispNote or in vault folders you choose. The app does not send this local vault data to VispNote servers.

Optional AI Features

VispNote works without AI. AI features are optional and must be configured by you in the app settings.

If you use a local Ollama model, requests are handled by your local Ollama setup. If you configure a hosted provider, such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, OpenRouter, or a custom OpenAI-compatible endpoint, VispNote sends the prompt, selected note text, retrieved context, and related settings needed to complete the AI request to the provider you selected.

Hosted AI providers process that information under their own terms and privacy policies. VispNote does not operate those services and cannot control how they process requests after you send them. You can disable AI, remove API keys, change providers, or avoid sending sensitive notes to hosted providers.

Website, Downloads, and Store Data

The VispNote website is a static website. It does not intentionally set cookies, run advertising, or run analytics for VispNote.

The website loads fonts from Google Fonts and requests public release data from the GitHub API so it can show current download links. If you click download, source code, release, or issue links, your browser contacts GitHub. Those third parties may receive standard connection information such as IP address, browser details, timestamps, and the requested URL.

If you install VispNote through Microsoft Store or another app store, the store operator may process account, device, download, installation, crash, purchase, or support data under its own policies. VispNote does not receive your private notes from Microsoft Store.

Support and Voluntary Information

If you contact the developer, open a GitHub issue, or send feedback, you may choose to provide contact details, logs, screenshots, note excerpts, or other information. That information is used only to respond to your request, troubleshoot issues, improve VispNote, and maintain project records.

Do not include private notes, API keys, secrets, or sensitive personal information in public GitHub issues.

How Information Is Used

Local app data is used to provide VispNote features, including editing, saving, searching, linking, graph navigation, canvases, tasks, reminders, workflows, settings, and optional AI actions. Website request data handled by third-party services is used to deliver fonts, releases, downloads, hosting, and store distribution.

Sharing and Disclosure

VispNote does not sell personal information. VispNote does not share your local notes with third parties unless you choose a feature or action that sends data outside your device, such as using a hosted AI provider, opening a download link, using GitHub support, syncing or backing up a vault with your own tools, or installing through an app store.

Information may also be disclosed if required to comply with applicable law, protect the security of VispNote, or respond to valid legal requests.

Your Controls

  • You can use VispNote without creating an account.
  • You can choose where vaults are stored and can access your notes directly as markdown files.
  • You can delete vaults, notes, canvases, indexes, settings, and API keys from your device.
  • You can keep AI disabled, use local Ollama, or choose which hosted AI provider receives requests.
  • You can avoid public support channels for private information and remove information you posted publicly where the platform allows it.

Retention

VispNote keeps local data on your device until you edit or delete it. If you use third-party backup, sync, AI, hosting, app store, or support services, those providers may retain data under their own retention policies. Public GitHub issues and comments may remain visible until edited, deleted, or otherwise handled through GitHub.

Security

VispNote relies on your operating system, device security, file permissions, disk encryption, and backup choices to protect local vaults. Keep your device, operating system, and VispNote installation up to date. Treat API keys and vault folders as sensitive data.

No app or transmission method can be guaranteed to be perfectly secure.

Children

VispNote is a productivity app and is not directed to children under 13. VispNote does not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to This Policy

This policy may be updated when VispNote features, distribution channels, or legal requirements change. The effective date at the top of the page shows when the current policy took effect.
